The great outdoors

Paddle around Pembrokeshire’s beautiful coastline, learn how to forage for food, or enjoy guided coastal walks in Pembrokeshire Fish Week 2010.

This year’s festival from 26th June to 4th July has many events for outdoor-lovers of all ages.

If you love walking, then there’s a variety of excursions. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is holding ‘An Island Ramble’ – a four-mile walk on the seabird paradise of Skomer Island, featuring the local birds, wild flowers and history.

There are also guided walks on Broad Haven and Newgale beach with Walkalongway with fresh mackerel barbecues on the beach.

Or why not take an enjoyable walk around Little Haven followed by a fresh fish lunch at the St. Bride’s Inn, organised by Discovery Walks of Pembrokeshire.

Find out why coasteering is so popular in Pembrokeshire with friendly, qualified guides – scramble around the coastline and learn how to forage for the many edibles on the coast.

Enjoy a morning kayak with Preseli Venture on the North Pembrokeshire coastline – an introductory session for kayakers taking in sandy beaches, rock arches, sea caves and tiny harbours.

There’s also sea kayaking or coasteering from Moylegrove with Adventure Beyond, for beginners and the more experienced alike.

Do your bit for the environment with a Sea Shore Ramble and Beach Clean at Newport Parrog, organised by Keep Wales Tidy and Pembrokeshire Biodiversity.

For children, there are family fun days at Milford Haven and Tenby, seashore safaris, crab-catching, beach activity days, and nature watches.

New this year is the Stackpole Fishy Family Bike Ride, organised by the National Trust and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, a 12-mile circular bike ride from Pembroke to Stackpole Quay. Enjoy an afternoon of snorkelling, beach exploration, games and craft before returning to Pembroke.

Also at Stackpole is a Marine Fun Day – a free family activity with seashore scavenging, games, and marine art.

Pembrokeshire Fish Week also provides lots of opportunities to combine eating the very freshest fish and seafood with coastal activities.

Go food foraging with guides at Poppit Sands, St Dogmaels where, after gathering a wide variety of edible seaside plants, you will be invited to prepare and eat a delicious feast in the sand dunes.

Or spend the day coasteering and having fun in the sea at Abereiddi, rounding it off with some warming fishy broth, fresh bread and a hot drink on a local beach.

Take a leisurely early evening cruise around Skomer Island, and return to The Clock House restaurant in Marloes for a delicious supper, including fresh seafood choices.

Try a spot of kayaking and fishing with the Sea Kayak Guides, pull up on a beach and cook what you catch or stop at a coastal pub along the way.

Enjoy the ‘Carreg Catch’ – gentle fishing from your canoe with qualified instructors, returning to the Carreg restaurant at Narberth to cook your catch in the outdoor courtyard kitchen.

If you like mackerel fishing trips, don’t miss ‘Swift Mackerel Madness’ with Solva Boat Trips – take your catch to be cooked and served up by the local Cambrian Inn.

Or hop aboard the ‘Summertime’ from Tenby Harbour, and when you return, take your catch to the town’s Buccaneer Inn or the Hope and Anchor, where they will cook and serve it for you.

“Fish Week is all about making use of Pembrokeshire’s wonderful natural assets like the coastline and rivers, and bringing those together with our fantastic local produce,” said Kate Morgan.

As well as many events for out-door enthusiasts, Pembrokeshire Fish Week is packed with activities for foodies, families, anglers, and culture-lovers.

The festival celebrates its 11th birthday this year and is organised by Pembrokeshire County Council.

It won the Gold Award in the Food Tourism Destination category in the True Taste Food and Drink Awards 2009 and Pembrokeshire Tourism’s ‘Premier Event Award’ 2009 / 2010.

Fish Week is part funded through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is financed by the EU and the Welsh Assembly Government.

The festival casts off on Saturday, 26th June with a big family fun day at Milford Haven Marina.  Come along and enjoy the fun!
