The National Conversation Takes to the Airwaves

The Wales We WantAs part of the pilot campaign aimed at getting Welsh people involved in a National Conversation to determine what Wales should be for future generations, The Wales We Want campaign is taking to the airwaves with a week long campaign on newly launched Heart North and Mid Wales radio.

This week the National Conversation broadens its appeal by going directly to listeners of Heart North and Mid Wales radio. Starting on Tuesday 20 May, listeners will be told about The Wales We Want and will urged to get involved in the debate by visiting the website, responding to the survey, or even hosting their own conversation.  35 radio trails will run five times throughout each day, for one week.

As an added incentive, listeners will be offered the chance to win an iPad Mini, by choosing the correct answer to this competition question:

What do the people of Wales consider the single most important issue for the wellbeing of future generations in Wales, according to the National Conversation’s survey of the population so far?

A: Climate change
B: Employment
C: Culture and language

The overwhelming response to this question in The Wales We Want’s online survey at this stage is answer A. Climate Change, with 27% of respondents from across Wales citing this as their single most important issue.

Launched in February, this pilot National Conversation aims to build a consensus around the long-term goals which are most important to those living in Wales.  Over the last few months the campaign, led by Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, Peter Davies, has prompted discussion and events across Wales. A diverse range of people and organisations have so far taken part, with ‘Futures Champions’ signing up to lead their own Conversation within their own communities.

One of the ways that many people have chosen to get involved in the debate is by completing The Wales We Want online survey at www.thewaleswewant.co.uk.

Peter Davies, Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, explains why he has decided to take the National Conversation to commercial radio: “This is a pilot campaign, and I feel it is important to explore as many ways as possible of reaching out and getting people from every part of Wales, and from every background, involved. The way to do this is through plenty of different media and methods.

“Heart is one of the most popular radio stations in Wales, and it’s exciting to bring news about The Wales We Want to its listenership as they go about their day to day business.  I hope that many of them will contribute their views on the sort of Wales they Want.”
