They’ve got the fish factor

A belly dancing duo and a singer were the joint winners of the Fish Factor talent competition.

The Sun Dancers of Ra – Amy Johnson and Ruth Jenkins – and singer Taryn Williams beat off the competition at the talent show held recently at Fishguard’s Theatr Gwaun.

Amy Johnson, 19, of Letterston, and Ruth, 17, of Fishguard, were delighted to be announced joint winners.

“The other finalists were really good,” said Amy, a student at Pembrokeshire College. “It was the first time we’ve entered a competition like that and it was quite an experience!”

Amy and Ruth, a pupil at Ysgol Bro Gwaun, started performing at festivals and carnivals after being taught belly-dancing for several years.

They were joined on the victory podium by Taryn Williams from Amroth.

Second prize in the contest went to singer songwriter Rory Doolin, while third prize was awarded to rock band The Audio.

Run by Pembrokeshire County Council’s arts department, the Fish Factor aimed to showcase the County’s creative talent.

Held at Fishguard’s Theatre Gwaun, it followed last year’s successful Battle of the Bands.

The contest was judged by County Councillor Sian James and author/playwright Derek Webb.

Councillor James said she was very impressed by the acts on show.

“There were some wonderful performances, which showcased our local talent.” she said. “But equally impressive was all the hard work and effort that the acts had obviously put in.”

The joint winners won £100 each, while the runner up was awarded £75 and third place winner £30.
