Cardiff Council’s Bereavement Services has raised £2,086.23 in 2009 for the Friends of Velindre Hospital by placing memorial trees in Thornhill Crematorium.
During December memorial trees were placed in the Courtyard of the Wenallt Chapel at Thornhill Crematorium and members of the public were invited to place tags on the trees in memory of their loved ones for a donation of £2. A charity collection was also taken after the Christmas Memorial Service held at the Wenallt Chapel.
The total sum raised for the charity during 2009 includes donations from Easter Memorial tags and memorial service collection. James Summers Roath Court and Lavernock Court also donated £500.
Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, said: “We recognise that the festive season and other national holidays can be a particularly difficult time for those who have lost a loved one. Cardiff Council is glad to be able to give this opportunity for people to pay their respects to their loved ones and to support the Friends of Velindre Hospital, an organisation that does such good work.”

“We are very grateful to Cardiff Council and James Summers & Sons plus all who organised the memorial service for the very generous donation as well as giving relatives of deceased cancer patients an opportunity to remember them at this difficult time.”
