Tidy Towns boost to improve the environment in South Pwllheli

The local environment in the South Pwllheli Communities First area has benefitted from a financial boost from Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns scheme.

South Pwllheli Communities First has been successful in its application for a grant to buy and install five wooden benches along the dunes on the Marian y De beach, and two picnic benches in the Bron y De park.

Gwynedd Council offers Tidy Towns grant to community groups and organisations to improve the natural environment by holding environmental improvement events, tackling projects and purchasing equipment.

Alan Williams, Chairman of the South Pwllheli Communities First Partnership said: “We as the South Pwllheli Communities First Partnership are in constant contact with the local community, and many wished to see benches installed in this popular location. You can reach the benches by walking towards the sand dunes from the Morfa Garreg and Bron y De estates, or by walking along the dunes from the prom.

“The benches will allow people to enjoy the fresh air by walking along the dunes, and pausing at the benches to take in the wonderful views of Pwllheli and the sea. By installing the benches we hope that we will encourage more people to take a walk and enjoy time in the local environment and the local community’s natural resources.”

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Portfolio Leader for the Environment, added:

“It’s great to see environmental improvements introduced that are based on the opinions and aspirations of local people. This is further evidence of Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns scheme having a positive effect within the community

“I hope that local residents will enjoy these improvements.”

Gwynedd Council’s Maritime Service agreed to maintain this piece of land and benches. South Pwllheli Communities First also worked with the Council’s Highways and Municipal Department to install two picnic tables at the Bron y De park, and creating a path which is suitable for wheelchair users. The department agreed to take ownership of the picnic tables and to maintain them.

The Tidy Towns grant is part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s environment improvement fund and is administered locally by Gwynedd Council working in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy.
