Tidy Towns scheme back in Flintshire – how to apply

Community groups, schools and voluntary organisations in Flintshire are being invited to apply for the latest round of funding from the Tidy Towns initiative.

The latest scheme has been launched at the Bryn Gwalia community vegetable garden by Flintshire County Council Executive Member for Regeneration and Tourism, Councillor Matt Wright, and Flintshire County Councillor Carolyn Cattermoul.

Councillor Wright said:

“The Bryn Gwalia community garden is a great example of what the Tidy Towns scheme is all about – turning something that was derelict into productive use. Last year this area behind the club house was wasteland but thanks to funding from this initiative, and the hard work of the whole community, it’s now a fantastic gardening space.”

The Tidy Towns scheme is Welsh Assembly Government funded and applications for grant funding are now invited for both larger and smaller scale projects:

Town Projects – for grant funding between £1,000 and £15,000

Deadline for the first round is 5pm 18th June 2010

Projects need to support Flintshire’s Town Action Plan programme, which the County Council and partners have adopted to address regeneration priorities in the main town centres of Connah’s Quay, Buckley, Flint, Holywell, Mold, Queensferry and Shotton. Projects will be expected to focus on lasting improvements to the environment, and/or measures to boost the vitality of towns. Activities will typically involve:

  • Clearance of litter and fly tipping
  • Environmental Improvements
  • Access Improvements
  • Enhancements to biodiversity and habitats
  • Positive uses for neglected sites to prevent reoccurring problems

The Welsh Assembly requires that each project involves volunteers from the local community, local businesses and schools. Flintshire County Council has commissioned BTCV to facilitate community involvement and work with groups to ensure projects address all the funding requirements. For an application form and further advice on eligibility, please contact Hywel Dodd at BTCV on (01978) 261538 or mobile: 07764655717, or e-mail [email protected].

Small-scale Clean Ups – for grant funding of up to £1,000

Community groups, voluntary organisations and schools based in Flintshire are invited to apply for a grant of up to £1,000 for small-scale clean-ups identified by the community as being a nuisance or a hazard. Eligible costs would include skip hire, litter bags and pickers, gloves, protective clothing and other minor equipment or materials to enable future maintenance.

For an application form and advice on eligibility, please contact Judith Wright at Keep Wales Tidy on 07717 495 188, or e-mail [email protected]. Please note that this funding stream is very limited and it will be administered on a first come first served basis.
