Angela Jones was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in April 2012 and again in October 2014 and wanted to do something different to raise money for the hospitals that provided her with “truly amazing care”.

Angela, who is employed as a Podiatrist at St. David’s Hospital in Cardiff , was first diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2012.  She wanted to do something to raise money for the Breast Centre at Llandough and Velindre, to say thank you for the truly amazing care they provided her with but couldn’t find the right challenge.

When the cancer returned in October 2014, Angela thought it was time to think about fundraising again and find a challenge that helped to repay the kindness shown to her throughout her treatment.

Angela had a light bulb moment of inspiration when her friend Juliet Still, who had been previously treated for cancer, gave her a bag of scarves she used to cover her head during her chemotherapy.

At a family party on Christmas night, Juliet took a scarf and taught Angela’s nephew Matthew how to tie a turban on his head and the trend caught on.  The rest of Angela’s family snatched the scarves, started tying them on their heads in different ways and taking photographs.

Angela came up with the ice bucket challenge-style “tie a head scarf top knot, post selfie on social media, nominate three friends and tell them where to donate.”

Angela said: “The family had so much fun I thought it would be a great idea to challenge others to do the same and I came up with the idea to donate to the two special charities that helped me.  The Breast Centre at Llandough and Velindre Victory over Cancer have not only have looked after me and my family but provide fantastic care for other cancer patients and their families.

“I am sure everyone will agree that these two fantastic causes provide an invaluable service to our community and to Wales as a whole.  So many of us have family or friends that have used these services.

“Personally, I am using both services and humbly want to thank them for the wonderful care they are giving me.”

The challenge is being launched at Shades Salon, Whitchurch on 3 March from 6pm – 8pm for drinks, nibbles and topknot tying fun.  To register attendance please email [email protected].
