Neath Port Talbot’s Youth Council has scooped a top award from the Philip Lawrence Awards Network.
The young people collected the prestigious award for their remarkable work to improve their local community.
They were presented with their £1000 prize by Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, at a top awards ceremony in London recently.
First set up ten years ago, the Youth Council has been meeting regularly with senior councillors and officers as well as the Police.
The 11-25 year olds have been representing young people across Neath Port Talbot and giving them a voice in decisions being made which affect them.
The awards were set up in memory of headteacher Philip Lawrence who was murdered outside his school fourteen years ago.
They reward projects led by young people to improve community safety and promote active citizenship.
Youth Council Coordinator, Janet Weaver, said, “Many associate young people with anti social behaviour. The Youth Council challenges this by showing in reality they have good ideas and care about the local community. This award recognises the Youth Council’s achievements and will empower them to stay motivated.”
Leader of Council, Ali Thomas, said, “Along with my colleagues, I have been personally meeting with the Youth Council since it was first formed and can vouch for the excellent contribution they make.
“I am delighted that their achievements have been nationally recognised with such a worthwhile, prestigious award.
“I congratulate them and look forward to meeting with them regularly in the future.
“The Council welcomes their contribution to the many challenges we face.”
