Top two floors of the Riverside car park will reopen temporarily

Two floors of the Riverside car park in Pontypool are due to be temporarily reopened next week until resurfacing works can be completed.

Around 80 spaces on the top two floors have been unavailable since October last year while essential maintenance work was carried out.

But a prolonged spell of rain followed by the worst freezing weather for 30 years has delayed works.

With further freezing weather forecasted and to ease pressure on parking spaces in the town, Torfaen Council has decided to reopen the floors until conditions improve. Work had to begin before Christmas because the old surface had deteriorated but this has now been removed and a temporary surface will be laid on ramps so cars can access them.

A temporary reopening of the decks was not possible before now because the worst snow and ice for 30 years made it impossible to lay a temporary surface.

The top floors will be inspected on a daily basis and may have to be closed whenever temperatures are close to freezing to prevent cars from skidding. Signs will also be displayed advising drivers to take care when using the decks, particularly during wet conditions.

Once the remaining resurfacing work is rescheduled, the floors will have to be closed for around 15 working days.

Until works are complete, enforcement on all time restricted Council-owned parking spaces in Pontypool will be suspended. But motorists must still comply with other parking regulations including displaying a valid badge when using a disabled person’s bay.

A Council spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused but the resurfacing work is essential maintenance work.

“Unfortunately, the worst weather for 30 years has delayed works, so, until they can be rescheduled we have decided, weather dependant, to temporarily reopen the top two floors.”
