Roads
Torfaen Council has been gritting and ploughing roads all night but because the snowfall has been heavy it has been settling again as soon as a gritting vehicle passes.

This has meant that even main routes will have a covering of snow until the weather clears.

Main routes are being targeted as a priority and the Council still has a stock of salt to help deal with freezing conditions.

The Council is recommending that unless the journey is essential, motorists do not drive on the roads until the weather clears.

Refuse and Recycling
Refuse and recycling collections in Torfaen have been cancelled today after heavy snowfall overnight.

Dangerous conditions have left us with no choice but to cancel today’s rounds in Croesyceiliog, Griffithstown, Llanyrafon, Llanfrechfa, Llantarnam, Oakfield, Ponthir and Sebastopol.

Snow and freezing weather has already caused widespread disruption to collections over the Christmas period and during the last week. We will endeavour to pick up missed bins and black boxes as soon as possible when the weather improves.

Staff and Office Closures
All main offices at the Civic Centre and County Hall are open however limited services will be available.

Customer service staff are opening local offices although it is highly unlikely the Blaenavon customer care office will open today.

The control room is operating and the main switchboard will be operating from 9am.

The Registrars service will not open this morning in Pontypool, staff working from the Cwmbran Customer Care office in Cwmbran Town Centre.

Torfaen Council has decided that because of the present conditions, we are advising staff that in accordance with the council’s Working in Adverse Weather Conditions Procedure, if public transport is not operating from near employees homes to their regular place of work, or it is unreasonable with regard to personal health and the distance involved to walk to the workplace, then staff should remain at home for the present.

If possible employees should contact their line manager to inform them accordingly.

This situation will be kept under review.

Social Care Services
Social Care day activities will be closed today. Torfaen council will be prioritising other services such as domiciliary care and community meals. It is highly likely these services will be disrupted and we ask that service users be patient.

Community Education Centres
Due to weather conditions all Torfaen County Borough Council Community Education Centres are closed to the public today. If travelling to one of the centres tomorrow, please phone the centre to check if open before commencing your journey.
