Monmouthshire County Council’s Trading Standards service is advising residents to be on guard against unscrupulous traders who pressurise people into signing for unnecessary and overpriced building work.
Trading Standards Manager Phil Glanville said; “We are concerned that some people spend large amounts of money for substandard work with little or no chance of redress.
“The law requires businesses to give cancellation rights in writing. Make sure you are given these rights and cancel within the time period if you change your mind. Do not agree to have work done by businesses that do not offer cancellation rights. Ask for details of other jobs and check with property owners that the company carried out the work.
“Get quotes from other businesses and be careful if you are asked to pay a deposit. Never pay the full amount in advance and do not pay any extra than that agreed in the contract.
“If you have access to the internet check for adverse reports on the business.”
Reputable businesses can apply for approval by Trading Standards and their details can be found at www.trustmark.org.uk
