The Cardiff International Food and Drink festival starts on Friday July 9, and Festival visitors will include the sailing vessel Tres Hombres bringing timber from Cardiff’s Norwegian partner region, Hordaland County.
The ‘Tres Hombres’ represents a new generation of carbon-neutral cargo ships. The route that she will take is the same one the Vikings took and will revive the old tradition of Norwegian sailing boats bringing pit props for the mines of South Wales.
Hordaland County have kindly donated Norwegian timber to the church, for the improvement work which will take place shortly. This will include improved disabled access, public toilets and a new external decked area.
To coincide with the arrival of the Tres Hombres, Deputy Mayor of Hordaland County, Tom-Christer Nilsen, will visit Cardiff and meet Cardiff Council’s Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells
Cllr Howells, said: “I am really looking forward to seeing the Tres Hombres moored in Cardiff Bay and meeting our colleagues from our partner region.
“I would also like to thank Hordaland’s Mayor, Torill Selsvold Nyborg, her Deputy, Tom-Christer Nilsen, who has come to Cardiff this weekend, and everyone in Hordaland County for their generous and ongoing support for the Norwegian Arts Centre. It’s fantastic that we are going to be able to use Norwegian timber on the project, and it be a great reminder of the friendship that links us”
County Mayor, Mrs Torill Selsvold Nyborg said “We are delighted that the Tres Hombres has been able to come to Bergen to collect our timber, and this green shipping service offers a perfect opportunity to link our tradition of building with wood with a traditional means of transport which also respects the environment”.
Part-sponsorship for the sailing ships voyage to Cardiff has been provided by Faithful + Gould, a member of the Atkins Group. Director Niall Sloan said:”Faithful + Gould is proud to be associated with this voyage and to support the Cardiff Festival. As a major construction consultancy we actively promote our ‘Carbon Critical’ agenda through our staff and our work. The carbon neutral approach to transport illustrated by the Tres Hombres is complementary to our RACE (Raising Awareness Cutting Energy) initiative.”
Tres Hombres will be open to the public over the weekend.
