Two AMs back Leanne Wood’s bid to become Plaid leader

Plaid Cymru Assembly Members Bethan Jenkins and Lindsay Whittle have given a huge boost to Leanne Wood’s bid to become leader of Plaid Cymru.

The South Wales West and East AMs join Jonathan Edwards, the Plaid Cymru MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, in publicly declaring their support for Leanne Wood’s leadership challenge.

The endorsements come just two days before the official launch of Leanne’s leadership campaign at the Pick & Shovel Social Club, Wind Street, Ammanford, with Jonathan Edwards MP on Thursday, January 5th (7pm).

Bethan Jenkins, said: “Leanne is an inspiring figure and can appeal to the normal person on the street. She is passionate about Wales, and is eager to work in a team of people to think of new, innovative ideas for the future. She understands that standing still is not an option, and wants to bring new people on board to broaden the appeal of Plaid Cymru.”

“I joined Plaid Cymru initially as I was enthused by Leanne and her commitment to the party. So if you want a truly new and different direction for Wales, one which restates Plaid Cymru’s commitment to independence while developing a strong and sustainable economy whose future is decided by the people of Wales, then vote for Leanne to become  leader of Plaid Cymru.”

“Wales has suffered almost 100 years of industrial and, therefore, economic decline. Not only is this a damning indictment of the Westminster parties’ inability to deliver for this nation, it also presses more urgently the case for solutions to the challenges ahead of us. Her Greenprint policy paper offers those much needed practical solutions.

Lindsay Whittle said: “Plaid Cymru has to re-establish itself as the progressive opposition to not only to Labour in Wales but the Con Dem government in London.

Leanne has an excellent track record of scrutinising and harassing politicians to ensure the voice of the ordinary person is heard in the corridors of power. No Minister is safe from her probing questions, no level of government can hide from her tenacity. She is the Welsh terrier that politics in Wales has needed for some time.

“Under her leadership, I believe that Plaid Cymru can become an effective fighting machine, ready for that great stride into effective government. We need a woman of the people to lead us. Leanne is that woman.”

Leanne Wood said: “It is very heartening to be endorsed for my leadership bid  by two hard-working and prominent members of Plaid Cymru.”
