Gwent Police seized 17 vehicles and made 3 arrests during a two day ANPR operation in Newport on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th December.
Officers from the Force’s ANPR team carried out high visibility mobile patrols to prevent and deter crime, detect offences and take criminals, unsafe vehicles and unsafe drivers off our roads.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology is used by officers to check vehicle registration numbers against a number of databases and any vehicles of interest are stopped and checked.
This operation resulted in:
- 17 vehicles seized under section 165 – no insurance
- 1 person arrested and charged with providing a positive breath test
- 1 person arrested for driving while disqualified
- 1 person arrested for possession of drugs
- 23 fixed penalty notices issued and 11 people reported for summons (for various offences including driving with no insurance, driving without a licence, driving without a valid MOT, using a mobile phone while driving and driving without wearing a seatbelt)
Officers also used the operation as an opportunity to gain intelligence and to carry out 94 breath tests as part of the seasonal anti-drink drive campaign.

“We use ANPR 24 hours a day, seven days a week – it is an outstanding tool in making Gwent safer and taking criminals off the road. All criminals use the roads and by using this technology we further increase our ability to prevent and detect crime.”
