Karl Jenkins will conduct the UK premiere of his latest work, Beirdd Cymru (Poets of Wales), on the Pavilion stage as part of the Vale of Glamorgan National Eisteddfod concerts line-up, announced today (28 February).
Details of the concerts were announced as the Eisteddfod team travelled around the Vale promoting and publicising the festival, held at the old airfield in Llandow near Cowbridge and Llantwit Major from 4-11 August this year.
Eisteddfod Organiser, Hywel Wyn Edwards, said, “This year’s evenings are slightly different to the usual concert line-ups we’ve had over recent years, and I hope that they will appeal to our regular concerts goers as well as bringing a new audience into the Pavilion for the evening events. We have a vast array of talents appearing at this year’s festival, and we hope the evenings offer something for everyone.
“We are delighted to welcome some of Wales’ best loved performers back to the festival, and we are also pleased to see so many new faces – although just as well-known – appearing in the Pavilion this year in the Vale of Glamorgan. There just over five months to go before the festival starts and we hope to welcome thousands of visitors to Llandow for a glorious week of entertainment and enjoyment.”
Join us to enjoy Only Men Aloud at the opening concert on Friday 3 August, with Only Boys Aloud – the talented youth choir created for the opening concert at the 2010 Eisteddfod – returning to their original home on the Pavilion stage.
The main work in the Saturday evening concert is the UK Premiere of Karl Jenkins’ Beirdd Cymru (Bards of Wales) with the composer himself conducting. The work was first performed in Hungary in 2011, and the words were translated into Welsh by Twm Morys. Two of the greatest soloists of our time, Dennis O’Neill and Rebecca Evans will also join the 200 strong Eisteddfod Choir.
The Cymanfa Ganu (congregationalsinging festival) is held in the Pavilion on Sunday. The festival will be led by experienced conductor, Euros Rhys Evans, with Robert Nicholls on the organ. The evening is supported by the Radnor Walk Welsh Congregational Church, Chelsea, London.

Tuesday is comedy night at the Pavilion as we host the biggest night in Welsh comedy history! Join Tudur Owen, Arthur Picton, Daniel Glyn, Gary Slaymaker , Ifan Gruffudd, Dewi Pws and many more on stage for a hilarious evening of sketches and stand-up. This evening will be suitable for ages 14 and over.
Wednesday and Friday evening sees competing on the Pavilion stage, with youth competitions on Wednesday and choral competitions on Friday.
We can enjoy an evening with Caryl on Thursday night, with a brand new show created for this year’s Eisteddfod. Caryl Parry Jones is one os Wales’ best loved and versatile performers, so join us – and some of her most famous characters – for an entertaining one-off show.
