Valleys get ready for Rhigos Rally team challenge

Young people from two neighbouring valleys, the Rhondda and Cynon, are getting ready to take part in the first Rhigos Rally team challenge this summer.

The Rhigos Forest, between Hirwaun and Treherbert, is the venue for the challenge that is being organised by the youth offending team and the outdoor education team from Rhondda Cynon Taff together with the Valleys Kids project based in Penyrenglyn and Hirwaun Y.M.C.A.

The challenge will include a treasure hunt, team-building games, outdoor education activities and map-reading.

The aim of the event is to involve young people from different valleys in outdoor activities so that they can see how to make positive use of their leisure time in natural surroundings.

Martin Bewick, Youth Worker at Rhondda Cynon Taff, said, “Together with the other organisers, I hope that the Rhigos Rally team challenge will help break down barriers and lead to a reduction in anti-social behaviour in the area.”

Rhigos Forest is owned by Forestry Commission Wales. The local Forest Ranger, Mike James, has worked with the challenge organisers to identify a route into the forest and areas for the activities to take place.

Mike said, “The woodlands of Wales provide a rich resource for recreation activities and projects such as this challenge will help educate young people on the safe and responsible use of the forest for leisure activities.”
