VoG Update on gritting and refuse collections

Highways Winter Maintenance
Our gritting staff and vehicles have been working throughout the weekend to keep all our major roads open. These teams have been assisted by staff from our Cleansing and Parks Sections who have been clearing the footways in our town centre areas in preparation for the busy shopping weekend.

Unfortunately, as with all Councils, we do not treat our entire Highway network (we currently treat 43%) and there are a number of side roads and footways where conditions remain difficult due to the recent snow and ice. We have cleared a number of these areas using heavy plant, but since we need to focus on keeping the major routes open, there are simply too many of these areas to practically address.

We do however have over 200 salt bins sited at strategic locations around the Vale and residents are asked to use the salt in these bins to assist in treating footways and side roads that are off the current gritting routes.

If any salt bins require replenishing residents are asked to inform our contact centre on 01446 70011.

Refuse collection disrupted tomorrow (Monday) due to adverse weather
Regrettably, due to the continued adverse weather conditions, collection services will be severely disrupted on Monday 20th December 2010.

There will be no collections of paper, cans, glass, plastic or cardboard as all efforts will be concentrated on collecting black bags and kitchen waste. This will include any black bag or kitchen waste collections left over from Friday 17th.

As a number of side streets and housing estates in the Vale are still affected by snow and ice, our refuse collection vehicle operations will be limited to main roads. These vehicles will be assisted by a number of smaller 4 wheel drive vehicles and additional staff who will take refuse and kitchen waste from side streets to the main roads.

The position with our Civic Amenity sites will be reviewed early on Monday 20th December 2010. Residents are also asked to check the website for updates as regards the opening arrangements and times etc.

All bulky and green waste collections will be suspended on Monday 20th December 2010. Residents will be individually contacted for their collections to be rescheduled.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and are taking all measures possible to reinstate our full range of services. Future weather predictions, whilst uncertain, suggest further periods of snow during week commencing 20th December 2010. Residents are therefore reminded to check our website on a regular basis for updates.
