Wales’ Chief Medical Officer offers bank holiday health advice

With the two bank holiday weekends approaching, Wales’ Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Jewell has reminded the public, especially those on regular medication, to make sure that they have enough to last them over the long bank holiday weekends.

Dr Jewell said:

“It is important that you know the opening hours of your GP and pharmacists, especially if you take regular medication. Check now that you have adequate supplies, as opening hours will change with four bank holidays for Easter, the Royal Wedding and May Day in quick succession. This is similar to preparing for and stocking up for the Christmas and New Year period.”

Dr Jewell also emphasised the importance of choosing the right option for accessing health care over the period:

“The full range of health services will of course still be available for everyone who needs them, but it is important that people go to the right place.

“By choosing well, patients will receive the best and quickest care, leaving emergency services to help those who need them most.

“Anecdotal evidence has shown that some people turn up at the hospital Emergency Departments with minor injuries or conditions which can be managed elsewhere or even at home. GP and Pharmacy services in the community will be available, including the GP out of hours services.

“If you are feeling unwell and you are not sure what to do, call NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47 and speak to a nurse adviser, or log on to the website www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk for information and advice. Both services are available 24 hours a day, every day.

“The aim is to make sure people living in Wales get the right care in the right place at the right time.”
