The search for the next generation of wheelchair tennis stars is coming to Wales.
The success of the British wheelchair tennis team at London 2012 has led to the creation of Ticket2Tokyo – a campaign run by the Tennis Foundation, with support from a number of organisations including the British Paralympic Association and the Lawn Tennis Association.
The talent-searching events are coming to Swansea and Wrexham in a bid to find potential athletes from across Wales. Entrants must prove themselves dedicated as they contend for a chance to train for and compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
While no previous tennis experience is necessary, the individuals chosen should be active and have the capability to develop under the guidance of top coaches in a world-class training environment.
Participants must have a medically diagnosed permanent mobility related physical disability, but do not have to use a wheelchair in everyday life.
The Talent ID festivals are being held on September 20th (Wrexham) 21st (Swansea), from 1pm to 4pm.
“The opportunity that Ticket2Tokyo gives disabled athletes is tremendous,” said Pam Griffiths, National Participation Manager for Tennis Wales. “Not only is the campaign looking for someone to represent Britain for the ParalympicsGB team, but also just for people to have fun trying tennis and maybe start playing and competing locally. I would encourage anyone who is interested about playing wheelchair tennis to attend one of the events.”
