Walking a mile for Mental Health

Samba music filled the air in Pontypridd to celebrate the start of Mental Health Week in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Cardiff-based band Samba Galez brought a carnival atmosphere to the town centre as part of a walk by supporters of Mental Health Week. People of all ages who met in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park to “Walk a Mile for Mental Health” were joined by the band.

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Mayor, Councillor Simon Lloyd, joined the group in the park and wished them well for the week of events and activities ahead.

Cllr Lloyd said: “There is a link between physical and mental health, which is why the idea of a walk was chosen, to emphasise the importance of looking after your physical health with a view to promoting good mental health.

“The event was a great success and organisers have decided it should be bigger and better next year, with more local organisations invited to join the walk.”

Mental Health Week (October 9-15) is now well established in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Individuals and organisations involved aim to raise awareness of mental health issues and promote good mental health.

Events held across the county borough this year included activity days, a social evening and a ‘Living Library’, with local people talking about their experiences of dealing with mental ill health.
