Warning to litter louts in Caernarfon

Officers in Caernarfon are warning residents and visitors that littering will not be tolerated in the town.

The crackdown has begun in an on-going drive to ensure the town is clean and litter-free and that environmental crime will not be welcomed. Anybody caught littering the street will face paying a fixed penalty of £50 or be prosecuted.

Police Community Support Officer Annette Jones said: “We make no apologies for getting tough. Most of the residents use litter bins or take their rubbish home with them, but the actions of a few irresponsible people can blight an area.”

She added: “We will take robust action against those responsible. Not only is litter unsightly it’s also expensive, and can cost thousands of pounds a year to clean.”

Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Stephen Williams said: “From experience, littering involves anti-social behaviour in various forms, which includes, for example drinking alcohol by individuals or groups of people, some of whom discard the containers nearby.

“In whatever form littering appears, it is a cause of complaint by members of the community. With these new powers granted to PCSOs, the penalty notice will be issued if an offence of littering is witnessed.”
