Watch out for Council Tax rebate scam says Blaenau Gwent Council

Blaenau Gwent Council is warning people to be on the lookout for a telephone scam which appears to offer them money back on their Council Tax.

The Council has received reports that the scam is operating in Blaenau Gwent again – following similar reports earlier this year and in November 2009.

Someone – claiming to be from the Council – tells the potential victim that they have overpaid their Council Tax and that they are entitled to a rebate. They then ask for bank account details.

The Council will never contact anyone unexpectedly by phone informing them that they have overpaid, and requesting their bank details.

People are advised never to give out personal or financial details on the telephone unless they are absolutely sure they are talking to a dedicated Council officer.

If you do receive a suspicious phone call asking for money or your personal or financial details then hang up and report it to the Council’s Trading Standards team on 01495 356138 or Consumer Direct on 08454040506

If you have any enquiries regarding your Council Tax account call 01495 355212.
