Watersports Centre Contractor Appointed

The contractor for the Watersports development on Colwyn Bay Promenade has been appointed.

The contract for the Watersports Centre, which forms the next phase of the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project, has been awarded to North Wales based Wynne Construction, following a tender process carried out in 2011.  The Centre will be built on top of the engineering work, which has recently been completed.

Wynne Construction will be starting on site this month and work is expected to take nine months. It will include the construction of a new single storey Watersports Centre, which will house a café/bistro, an educational/conference facility, changing rooms, a retail unit and workshop. The building will also include a viewing area on the roof.

There will be extensive landscaping work around the remainder of the Hotspot including a car park, external showers and seating areas.

Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Conwy Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Development, said: “The Watersports Centre is a vital part of the redevelopment of the Waterfront and will create a destination on the promenade for visitors to use.  I welcome Wynne Construction into the Waterfront Team and very much look forward to seeing the work advance on site over the coming months. The development will complement the excellent Eirias project we’ve already achieved (also Wynne Construction) and create a long lasting legacy for the town.”

Chris Wynne, Managing Director of Wynne Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract for Conwy County Borough Council and to be, once again, working on a key project in the regeneration of the Colwyn Bay area. The Watersports Centre further secures the employment of our existing workforce and also enables us to offer employment and opportunities to a number of skilled workers in the Conwy region.”

As part of the Wynne Construction site, a small visitor centre will be open to the public for people to call in to find out more about the development and the latest information about the work.  Details of the opening hours will be available soon.
