AM Welcomes News on Chronic Conditions

Jeff_CuthbertLabour AM Jeff Cuthbert has welcomed news that the number of hospital admissions for chronic conditions in Wales is down.

The figures are to be found in NHS Wales Chief Executive David Sissling’s second Annual Report which will be published later this week.

Compared to the previous year, coronary heart disease (CHD) admissions fell 5.5 per cent, and diabetes admissions fell by 3.5 per cent. There was also a fall of 2.5 per cent in CHD readmissions.

Jeff Cuthbert AM said: “This is certainly very welcome news from the NHS Wales Chief Executive’s Annual Report. As a type 2 diabetic myself, I am fully aware of the challenges of managing a chronic condition, and know that people with diabetes and other conditions do not want to be admitted or re-admitted to hospital unless it is absolutely necessary for them.

“While there is still much work to be done as we look to reduce the pressure on unscheduled care services, this is certainly a step in the right direction and the good work must be kept up.”
