Welcoming the world to Llangollen

Denbighshire County Council is preparing to welcome the world to Llangollen as participants from across the world join in the festivities of the town’s annual International Eisteddfod (July 3-8).

The Council will have a marquee on the Eisteddfod field throughout the week with an Olympic theme. Staff from  Leisure Services will be present throughout the week promoting the Council’s leisure strategy through a programme of leisure activities, including the use of easyline exercise equipment.

Staff from the Arts in Schools service will be present to promote the cultural element of the Olympics through storytelling and arts and crafts activities. The activities will be centred on a story called Mantell which has been created as part of the Cauldrons and Furnaces project being staged at Denbigh Castle on July 8th.

Jamie Groves, Head of Communications, Marketing and Leisure, said: “The Olympics seems to be the ideal theme for our marquee this year, as a number of our events over the summer have an Olympic flavour, with an emphasis on improving people’s health and well-being.

“In May we celebrated the Olympic Torch Relay travelling through Rhyl and Rhuddlan;  we have the Cultural event being staged at Denbigh Castle at the end of the Eisteddfod week and we also have a major event in Rhyl Events Arena on the 12th of August where we will be screening the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, as well as a major concert featuring McFly.

Councillor Huw Jones, Cabinet Lead Member with responsibility for Culture, said: “We look forward to welcoming people from Denbighshire, Wales and the rest of the world to our marquee during Eisteddfod week.

“It’s a pleasure to be involved in such a prestigious event and a great opportunity to showcase Denbighshire to the rest of the world.

“We hope that people take time in their Eisteddfod schedule to sample the wealth of attractions, facilities and glorious scenery on offer in the county.”
