Welsh Assembly Government agrees to close Arfryn School

The Welsh Assembly Government has agreed to close Swansea’s Arfryn Primary School.

This means that the school will close on August 31 this year and its pupils can attend neighbouring Clwyd Community Primary School or a school of their parents/carers preference from September 2010.

All children currently at Arfryn Primary School will be offered a place at Clwyd Community Primary School.

Officers from Swansea Council’s education department will now work with the schools during this transition process.

Leighton Andrews, The Welsh Assembly Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning, considered the proposal put forward by Swansea Council as part of its QEd 2020 programme along with comments and objections submitted to him as part of statutory consultation.

He agreed that the proposal would enable Swansea Council to deliver primary education in the area more cost-effectively and to remove more than 100 surplus places. The proposal was agreed on the condition that there is sufficient classroom space available at neighbouring Clwyd Community Primary.

Cllr Mike Day, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “We appreciate this will be a difficult time for pupils, staff, parents and governors affected but this decision is one that can help us ensure that we can continue to maintain and improve the quality of education available to the children currently attending both schools.

“The proposal went through a comprehensive period of public consultation and statutory notice before progressing to the Welsh Assembly Government for final decision.”
