The Welsh Assembly Government has agreed to close Cwm Primary School in Swansea.
Cwm Primary School will close on August 31 2010 and all children currently in reception and the older year groups will be offered a place at Cwm Glas Primary School.
Parents of children in nursery who will be moving to reception in September are asked to apply for a reception place at Cwm Glas Primary School. This also applies if the child or children are currently in nursery at Cwm Glas itself.
Pupils, staff, parents and governors at the two schools have all been informed.
The proposal to close the school was put forward by Swansea Council as part of its QEd (Quality in Education) 2020 programme looking to tackle issues such as falling rolls and poor school building conditions to ensure children continue to get access to high-quality education, the widest possible curriculum and the very best facilities in future.
The proposal was one of four developed by the Council alongside key stakeholders to help make inroads into a £146million school building structural maintenance programme and ensure money is spent on provision for children rather than on empty desks.
The Welsh Assembly Government has yet to make a final decision on the other proposals. These are:
- The closure of Arfryn Primary School with the pupils in future attending neighbouring Clwyd Primary School.
- The closure of Llanmorlais Primary School with the pupils in future attending neighbouring Penclawdd School.
- The establishing of an all-through primary school provision at the current Tregwyr Infants and Tregwyr Junior School sites.
Each proposal went through a comprehensive period of public consultation and statutory notice before progressing to the Welsh Assembly Government for final decisions.
Cllr Mike Day, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “We appreciate this is a difficult time for pupils, staff, parents and governors affected but this decision is one that can help us maintain the quality of provision in the future.
“Officers at Swansea Council will support staff, pupils and parents with the transition process and are arranging to attend both schools.”
