Macmillan Cancer Support is urging people in Wales to help raise £8.3m – by taking part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. The charity wants people across the country to take part in the event on Friday September 24 to help raise millions of pounds to fund cancer services across Wales.
Last year hundreds of Macmillan coffee mornings were held across Wales raising more than £300,000. But this year the charity is hoping more people will join in the fun and hold coffee mornings in their homes, community centres, schools and work places.
Cath Lindley, Macmillan general manager for Wales, said:
“Macmillan is there to help from the moment someone is diagnosed with cancer and the support we provide is vital. Our doctors and nurses offer specialist medical care and emotional support, while our benefits advisors help cancer patients get the government money they are entitled to. Macmillan also provides grants to people with cancer who are struggling financially to help with essential equipment, clothes and to pay fuel bills. We rely on the money raised from events like the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to fund these vital services.”
Macmillan has around 200 professionals working in hospitals and out in the community across Wales. As well as our well known nurses there are Macmillan occupational therapists, welfare benefits advisers, pharmacists and physiotherapist who all support people affected by cancer in Wales.
Wendy Wilkinson is a Macmillan Occupational Therapist based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea. She said:
“Every day I help people affected by cancer have more good days. When you’re living with cancer, it’s the little things that can make a huge difference. Being able to get an answer to a question that’s been troubling you, knowing that you can pay your next gas and electricity bill, knowing that when you finish treatment, there’ll be somebody there to help you get back to a sense of normality.
“I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to support this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning so that Macmillan professionals like me can continue to support as many people affected by cancer as possible to have more good days.”
