Welsh economy in dire state say Tories

Welsh Conservatives today confronted the Assembly Government over the economy.

Speaking in the Assembly chamber, Leader of the Opposition Nick Bourne AM challenged the First Minister over the Assembly Government’s failure to recognise its shortcomings on the economy and inward investment.

Commenting on the exchange, Mr Bourne said: “The First Minister’s assessment of the state of the economy in Wales is not based on the reality of the situation.

“Under the Labour-Plaid stewardship, unemployment is in Wales is at a 15 year high, despite the fact that spending on economic development per head last year was the highest of the UK nations and regions.

“Despite the Deputy First Minister’s claims that investment into research and development in Wales is one of his top priorities, we have seen a spending decline in this area.

“Likewise, the First Minister has shown a distinctly lukewarm attitude towards inward investment in Wales.

“The Assembly Government is continuing to demonstrate that they do not have ability to deliver the necessary direction and support that the Welsh economy desperately needs.”
