Welsh Street road works near completion

Resurfacing work extending from the Lions Lodge roundabout to the Dell school in Chepstow’s Welsh Street is nearing completion.

Part of Monmouthshire County Council’s Safe Routes in the Communities initiative, the scheme includes a wider continuous path between the comprehensive school and town centre, new zebra crossings near the Dell school and the leisure centre and a narrower carriageway with simplified traffic calming arrangements.

The final phase involving the carriageway resurfacing and installation of the traffic calming features is planned to coincide with half term and will start on Sunday, February 20th with completion scheduled for the end of the week.  Welsh Street will be closed in sections to vehicles between 9.30 am and 3.30pm to enable resurfacing to take place, but will be open for normal use at other times, including peak periods.  It’ll be business as usual in the town, with all car parks, including Welsh Street, open and all bus services operating, though minor diversions may be in place at times.

Paul Keeble, the Council’s Traffic and Network Manager, said: “The resurfacing and simplified calming features will complete this scheme to provide a more pleasant and safer environment, particularly for the many youngsters who use the street on a daily basis on their way to school.  We would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while work has taken place.”
