Welsh Water tackles flooding in Barry

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, facilitated by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, continues to undertake major investment works to help alleviate potential incidents of flooding in the Barry area.

Two schemes were planned as part of the works – one at Barry Road and the other in Weston Square.

The £300,000 scheme at Barry Road involves constructing a new sewer along Barry Road from the junction of Court Road before moving through Cadoxton Surgery car park and on to the rear gardens of 33 – 39 Barry Road. The road closure on Barry Road is due to be lifted this week ahead of schedule. The scheme is due for completion in October 2009.

Work is also progressing well on the £3.2 million scheme in Weston Square which involves constructing a new sewer using tunnelling methods from the playground in Weston Square, under the railway line and into Dow Corning land. On Tuesday 8 September 2009 a road closure will come into effect on the section of road on the tunnel linking Weston Square and Cardiff Road until February 2010.

The Weston Square scheme is the second phase of investment work to resolve flooding in this area. The first phase, worth over £700,000, was completed in Morlais Street, Barry earlier in the year.

Welsh Water and the Vale of Glamorgan Council apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused during the road closure period of both schemes.

Welsh Water’s regional investment manager Andrew Bowen said: “We would like to thank the local community in advance for their patience while this essential work is carried out. The schemes will directly benefit Barry residents and reflects our continued commitment to provide improvements to customers through investment in our network.”

Head of the Vale Council’s visible services department, Miles Punter, said: “I am extremely pleased that Welsh Water is continuing to invest in improving its infrastructure in the Vale of Glamorgan. These particular locations regularly suffer from flooding during periods of heavy rainfall and it is hoped that these works will greatly reduce the risk of flooding in the future.”

The work is being delivered by Morgan Est plc on behalf of Welsh Water.

Welsh Water is investing heavily and working hard to ensure top quality services to all its communities in Wales. The company is investing £1.4 billion in its water and sewerage network between 2005 and 2010.

It is a not-for-profit company with the sole objective of providing top quality services for its customers. Welsh Water does not have shareholders, and any profits made are reinvested in the business for the benefit of customers, as well as for returning to customers as ‘dividends’. The customer dividend for 2009/10 is £22 for each customer receiving both water and wastewater services.
