A special photographic competition is underway to find photos from Caerphilly county borough people, groups or organisations that help to challenge generational stereotypes.
The competition is being organised by the 50+ Positive Action Partnership together with the Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership, and is titled ‘We are not as bad as you think we are!’
Residents are being encouraged to provide images, or ideas for images, that show the best in younger and older people – an image that challenges generational stereotypes.
Cabinet member, Cllr Colin Hobbs, who is also older people’s champion for Caerphilly county borough said, “In today’s society, older and younger people are often on the receiving end of the most negative stereotyping. We are all aware of the bad press about young people dressed in their ‘hoodie’ outfits, loitering on street corners.
Older people are often equally stereotypically labelled as frail and grumpy with little understanding of modern technology.
This competition is excellent in that it allows us to challenge these negative stereotypes, and I would encourage as many people to get involved in creating images, or ideas for images as possible.”
The photographs deemed most appropriate to the theme of ‘We’re not as bad as you think we are!’ will be used as the core of a campaign being launched in the spring.
The campaign will use positive images to help promote better understanding, improve tolerance, and help bridge the generation gap between older and younger people.
An exhibition of the photographs will take place at various locations across the county borough.
An overall winner will be selected to win a £150 cash prize, with small prizes on offer for the 12 finalists.
The closing date for submissions to the competition is 28th February 2010.
