What do Gwynedd’s Archives have to offer?

GwyneddWith a number of television programmes featuring family history and how people go about identifying their ancestors, more and more people are interested in tracing their own family tree.

With this in mind, Gwynedd Council’s Archives Service has arranged a series of taster sessions which will give people advice about how to start trace family history will prove very popular.

The one day courses which will be led by the Council’s Archive Services staff which will give advice on how to set about tracing your family history. Those attending the courses will have an opportunity to look at the various sources and evidence, as well as a chance to ask the archivists any questions which might be of use in getting started will tracing their family tree.

Councillor Roy Owen, who leads on Archives, Museums and the Arts for Gwynedd Council said:

“We hope that these courses will be an opportunity for anyone who is interested in local history to see the wealth of historically important records which are available, and to learn more about the valuable facilities at Gwynedd Council’s record offices.

“Similar courses which we have held in the past have been very popular, and we are confident that members of the public will be keen to book their places of these courses as well, so remember to book a place if you’re keen to attend one of the courses.”

Day courses will be held at Caernarfon Record Office on “Tracing Your Family History” on the following dates:

  • A one-day Family History Course (Welsh) on Saturday, 16 January 2010 at Caernarfon Record Office starting at 10.30am
  • A one-day Family History Course (English) on Monday, 18 January 2010 at Caernarfon Record Office starting at 10.30am

Taster courses will also be held at Caernarfon Record Office – it will be a brief introductory course aimed at those who have not previously used a record office.

The courses will be held on the following dates:

  • Introductory Course: What is in your local record office? (Welsh course) at Caernarfon Record Office from 10am to 12pm on Saturday, 30 January 2010-
  • Introductory Course: What is in your local record office? (English course) at Caernarfon Record Office from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, 30 January 2010

It is essential to book a place on all of these courses.
