Today, during Welsh Questions in the House of Commons, the Government revealed that they would be bringing forward legislation to allow Severn Bridge users to pay the toll by card for the first time.
The news was revealed following a probing question into the issue during Welsh Questions from Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, in which she labelled a system which allows payments in Euros but not credit or debit cards as bonkers.
Jenny has led the campaign in Parliament to reform the outdated system of payments at the Severn Bridge toll.
Commenting, Jenny said:
“This is a welcome step that will finally help to bring the Severn Bridge toll into the 21st century.
“The government has allowed this ridiculous situation to go on for way too long. Who carries that sort of money in loose change every time they step into their vehicle?
“The government must not allow this to drift. New legislation to allow card payments must come forward as soon as possible. I will be tabling questions in Parliament to find out when we can expect these changes.
“But card payments are only half of the issue. The Severn Bridge toll is extremely expensive and a real barrier to free movement of people and goods in and out of Wales.
“I will continue to press for the government to slash the price of the Severn Bridge toll.”
