Work gets underway on £9.3 million new school

Pupils from Ysgol yr Hendre’s School Council have given Gwynedd Council a helping hand to get work started on their multi-million pound new school in Caernarfon.

On completion the new Ysgol yr Hendre – which has been funded with the help of a £4.3 million Strategic Capital Investment Framework grant from the Welsh Assembly Government – will be one of the most state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly schools in the UK with a new style of learning environment, IT provision and facilities for family support services in the community.

Gwynedd Council Leader, Councillor Dyfed Edwards said:

“Children in Gwynedd have the right to be educated in the very best facilities and given every possible opportunity to succeed and flourish. As a Council we have a county-wide programme to deliver this vision, and the new Ysgol yr Hendre is the first of many exciting school building projects which we aim to deliver over the coming years.

“As well as providing a fitting new school for one of Wales’ most disadvantaged areas, the new Ysgol yr Hendre will also provide a valuable resource for the local community and a base from which to deliver a range of services for local people.”

Councillor Liz Saville Roberts who leads on Education on Gwynedd Council added:

“We have been waiting for this moment for a long time, and its great to see the building work getting underway. The pupils can now look forward to attending a real 21st century school with new and modern buildings which will meet their needs.

“Without a doubt the new school will have a positive impact upon the quality of education we can provide for the children at Ysgol yr Hendre for generations to come.”

When it opens in 2012 the new Ysgol yr Hendre – which is located at Cae Phillips, near the present school – will deliver the very best learning environment for up to 450 pupils and a genuine focus for the local community. The new building which will incorporate the latest green technology will have facilities for delivering adult education, health and social welfare initiatives as well as cultural and sporting activities.

Chair of Governors, Councillor Roy Owen said:

“We’re delighted to seeing work on our new school get underway – we’re grateful to everyone who has helped to make this dream a reality.

“The new school will include the very latest facilities and we aim to make full use of this wonderful new design to create a modern and happy learning environment for pupils, staff, parents and our friends in the local community.”

The Council has appointed north Wales company, Wynne Construction to carry out the building work. The project is funded with financial support from the Welsh Assembly Government and Gwynedd Council.
