Work progresses well at Swansea Canal

Work is nearing completion on the environmental improvements to the canal bank and towpath in Trebanos.

Following feedback from local residents, Neath Port Talbot Council drew up a masterplan which highlighted areas around the canal that needed improvements.

A main feature of the proposals is to create a Gateway to the canal as it emerges from the culvert in Pontardawe. The Gateway will include brick and stone walls with ceramic artwork set into the wall

Also planned is a new stepped ramp up to the bus stop on Swansea Road as well as links with the National Cycle Route south to Swansea and north to Ystradgynlais and Brecon Beacons.

Contractor Afan Landscapes is carrying out the £40,000 scheme which was designed by Town and Landscape Ltd.

Work is expected to be complete by the end of March.

Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “I’m pleased to see that work is progressing well and look forward to the scheme coming to fruition.

“I’m sure it will be much welcomed both by the local community and visitors. The area will be much improved and a pleasure for local residents to enjoy.”
