Work Starts at Parc Eirias

Contractors Wynne Construction have moved on-site this week to start building the new multi-purpose indoor centre at Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay.

The building work will take place within a fenced area south of the arena, near Abergele Road.  Access through this area of the park will be more limited than usual during construction.

The large multi-purpose indoor centre has been designed for use by all the community, including conference and classroom facilities for business and commerce events. As well as a gym and high performance sports analysis facilities, where the Welsh Rugby Union will be basing its North Wales Rugby Academy.  The work will also contribute to the stadium achieving Category A status for athletics events.

The total cost of the project is £6.5 million, which is being funded by £3.8m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Welsh Assembly Government Targeted Match Fund.  Funding has also been secured from the Welsh Assembly Government Strategic Regeneration Area fund, Conwy County Borough Council and the Welsh Rugby Union.

Cllr Graham Rees, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate Modernisation said: “After months of intensive work by the Project Team and the Project Board, who have been meeting on a weekly basis, I am delighted that the construction work at Parc Eirias is now underway and the project is on schedule for completion in September.”

Commenting on the project, Chris Wynne, Managing Director says: “We are delighted to have been awarded this project and to be working on a key element in the regeneration of the Colwyn Bay area.  Parc Eirias further secures the employment of our existing workforce and enables us to offer employment to a number of skilled workers in the area.”

A further tendering exercise is currently underway for work to bring the playing surface up to a standard suitable for international rugby and football and other field events.
