Work to start on Amman Valley cycleway

After years of development work and negotiation the County Councils of Carmarthenshire and Neath Port Talbot have made huge progress with two significant sections of the Amman Valley cycleway being secured and undergoing actual construction.

The key link from Ammanford through to Glanamman has been secured and clearing of the corridor is ongoing. Footpath diversionary work together with the creation of the corridor will continue through to June  although the eagerly anticipated completion for cycling may well  take several months longer.  This is due to ecological and other constraints but will be completed within the year.

Once completed there will be a continuous cycleway route from Ammanford to Garnant over 5km in length.

Neath Port Talbot have almost completed a 1.2km length west of Ystradowen on the line of the old railway after securing the land from Celtic Energy.

Both  Authorities will continue to  work together and strive for further links and development of the whole Amman Valley cycleway.  Significant progress has been made during the past 12 months, supported by funding from the Welsh Assembly Government  utilising Transport Grant monies.

Councillor Ali Thomas, Leader of the Council said: “This project has been delivered through the collaboration of both Unitary Authorities working with the Welsh Assembly Government.  It will contribute to active lifestyles for the people of Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and the increasing number of visitors attracted to the area by our growing network of cycleways”.
