Working together to eliminate violence against women

Once again this year members from the Gwynedd Domestic Abuse Forum are joining an international campaign to combat violence against women.

The UN has adopted 25 November as its International Day for The Elimination of Violence against Women. Women and men use this day and the following 16 days leading up to International Human Rights Day on 10 December to campaign for the end of violence against women and girls.

Kelly Mitchell, Gwynedd Domestic Abuse Co-ordinator said:

“It’s a sad fact that one in every four women in Wales and England will experience domestic abuse by their partner or ex-partner at some time in their life.

“In the UK a woman is assaulted in her home every six seconds, and tragically domestic violence is the largest cause of death in women worldwide aged 19-44. In Wales and England, two women a week are murdered by a partner or ex-partner.

“This is why we are determined to use this time to raise awareness about the problem, and to work with our partners to try to eliminate violence against women.”

Gwynedd Council, as members of the Gwynedd Community Safety Partnership will also be showing their support for the campaign. Every County Councillor in Gwynedd will be wearing the white ribbon during this particular week. In addition local Police Officers will also be wearing the white ribbon.

Members of the Gwynedd Domestic Abuse Forum are campaigning and raising awareness throughout the next few weeks by staging a range of events and activities at various locations. Events have already been held at the recent Dolgellau vs Pwllheli rugby match on 20 November as well as the football match between Dolgellau Football Club and Bow Street.

More events will be held at the following locations:

  • Attending the Porthmadog vs Ruthin football match on 4 December
  • Information stands will be in place at the canteen at Ysbyty Gwynedd on 27 November and Gwynedd Council’s reception area in Caernarfon on 25 November
  • Campaigning in various supermarket stores throughout Gwynedd including Morrisons Caernarfon on 25 and 26 November, the Co-op and Eurospar in Blaenau Ffestiniog on Friday, 26 November, Tesco in Porthmadog on Monday, 29 Novemeber and the High Street in Bala on Thursday night, 2 December; as well as campaigning through the local newspapers.

The stands will provide information regarding White Ribbon Day, generic information regarding domestic abuse, including helplines and the opportunity to obtain a white ribbon. White Ribbons will not be chargeable; however donations will be gratefully received. Any donations collected will go towards the Gwynedd Domestic Abuse Forum.
