World Books Day at Burry Port Library

Harry Potter, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood were amongst the first visitors to the newly refurbished Burry Port library.

Pupils of Burry Port Infant School dressed up as characters from their favourite story books to mark World Books Day, on Thursday, March 4.

Just days earlier, the library was officially re-opened following a £200,000 investment
The children were impressed with the new facilities, which have a nautical theme throughout to reflect the town’s maritime nature.

They listened as children’s librarian Catrin Simon read some children’s classics, as well as some new, modern stories.

Mark Jewell, regional library manager, said: “It was lovely to invite a group of local school children to the library on World Books Day, and for them to get involved in literature from an early age.

“We have a bright and vibrant children’s section at Burry Port, with factual and fictional books for all ages.

“We hope that following their visit, many of them will come back and sign up as members.”

The World Books Day event forms part of the Carmarthenshire Libraries campaign, which is encouraging new members to join and get free access to a wealth of books, DVDs, CDs, cassettes and the Internet.

Children have been invited to take part in a competition to design a new libraries mascot as part of the three-month campaign, sponsored by Gomer Press.

Prizes of books worth £250 will be given to the winning school and book vouchers worth £25 to the winning pupil.

A package of free offers has also been put together for adults joining a local library during March, April and May.

They include ski sessions at Pembrey Ski Slope, free inductions at Carmarthenshire Leisure Centre gyms and free theatre vouchers.

School children are also being encouraged to join, and to enter a competition to design a new libraries mascot.

Cllr Wooldridge added: “I hope people take advantage of this excellent facility they now have on their doorstep, and take the opportunity to join the library and qualify for the free gifts and competitions.”
