Wrexham Eisteddfod Choir is Formed

With little over fourteen months left before the Wrexham and District National Eisteddfod, the Eisteddfod Choir will begin their rehearsals on Sunday 23 May.

Ann Atkinson, well known as the former conductor of the hugely successful Fron Male Voice Choir, will conduct the 2011 National Eisteddfod Choir.  Ann is the Director of the North Wales International Music Festival.

Eisteddfod Organiser, Hywel Wyn Edwards, is looking forward to the Choir’s inaugral rehearsal, with their first public performance due in less than two months.  He says:

“We are very lucky to have Ann Atkinson as the conductor, and her experience is sure to help us to create a choir which will be worth hearing on the Pavilion stage during the Eisteddfod week next year.

“The Eisteddfod Choir is one of the wonders of the National Eisteddfod, and in the past we have welcomed members from Anglesey to Wrexham to the choir when the Eisteddfod is held in north Wales.  We hope that local singers will join us this year to create a successful choir for the 2011 Eisteddfod.”

The Choir’s first task will be to take part in the Cymanfa Ganu (congregational singing) to celebrate the Proclamation, held in St Giles’ Church on Sunday 4 July at 20.00, and will be recorded for the new series of Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol on S4C.

The first rehearsal will be held in Capel y Groes, Wrexham, at 19.30 on Sunday 23 May, and anyone interested in joining the choir can attend this rehearsal.

The Wrexham and District National Eisteddfod will be held on the land of Lower Berse Farm, Wrexham from 30 July – 6 August 2011.  The National Eisteddfod festival attracts around 160,000 visitors annually, and is held in north and south Wales alternately. Entry to all festival activities is free for the price of a daily Maes ticket.
