Hundreds of reception class pupils in Wrexham will receive a free book bag to help their reading skills.
Wrexham is one of only two authorities in Wales to have been selected as part of a pilot scheme supported by independent charity the Booktrust, education and media company Pearson and Basic Skills Cymru.
On Monday, October 19 author Ian Whybrow, who has written the popular children’s story “Harry and the bucket full of Dinosaurs” visited Ysgol Plas Coch, Wrexham and Acton Park Primary School. He read the booktime book ‘Harry and the Dinosaurs go to school’ to pupils as well as speaking to parents to develop their ideas to foster their love of reading.
Siwan Meirion is Wrexham County Borough Council’s Basic Skills Co-ordinator. She said: “This is a great opportunity for our youngest school children to develop their reading skills in a fun environment. Whilst they had the chance to hear the storybook brought to life by its author Ian Whybrow, parents were also be able to gain tips on encouraging their children to love and read books.
“We are grateful to the Booktrust, Pearson and Basic Skills Cymru for selecting Wrexham as an area to pilot this latest book bag initiative.”
