Wrexham Rail Scheme Extended for Six Months

Lesley_GriffithsA popular concessionary rail scheme is to be extended by the Welsh Government until March 2014.

Local Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has welcomed the announcement enabling eligible pass holders to continue to benefit from free rail travel on the Welsh section of the Wrexham to Bidston line.

Since 2007, people over the age of 60 and disabled people of all ages have been able to travel free of charge on selected train services throughout Wales. The programme complements the concessionary bus fares scheme and allows access to public transport in areas where bus services are limited.

Wrexham AM Griffiths said:

“I am pleased this popular scheme looks set to continue as it provides such a valuable service for the elderly and disabled people in our region.”

“With the announcement of the redoubling of the Wrexham to Chester line last week, this latest announcement is another example of the Welsh Government’s commitment in delivering for people in Wrexham and North East Wales.”

“The hard work does not end here however; discussions are on-going between the necessary groups and organisations regarding rail line electrification and I will be leading a task force in the coming weeks which will scrutinise and look to advance the key current transport issues in the area.”
