Wrexham Receives over £10m from Welsh Government Regeneration Grant

Lesley_GriffithsWrexham has secured its share of £100m capital investment from the Welsh Government which will aim to regenerate areas of the town.

Through the Vibrant and Viable Places programme, Wrexham will receive over £10.5 million over three years.

Local Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has hailed the news and praised Wrexham Council for their application.

The funding will be used for various regeneration projects to help create jobs, build and improve hundreds of homes and community facilities, as well as creating new businesses and opportunities for residents to develop skills.

Overall, the estimated worth of the project is expected to be within the region of £27 million, with match funding coming from other sectors.

Originally submitting their proposals in July 2013, Wrexham Council were seeking finance to help regenerate the town centre, as well as Communities First areas in Caia Park and Hightown.

The procedure was highly competitive as every Local Authority in Wales applied for funding.

Wrexham AM Griffiths said:

“Despite the cuts imposed by UK Government, the Vibrant and Viable Places programme demonstrates the Welsh Government’s commitment to investing and regenerating communities across Wales.”

“Competition from all the other Local Authorities across Wales was fierce but Wrexham Council worked extremely hard to develop a thorough and detailed application.”

“Managing to secure 90% funding of their original bid shows the quality of the Council’s proposals and is fantastic news for the town.”

“Regeneration focused on Wrexham town centre and both Communities First areas is extremely important to our region. I have long supported the bid, corresponded with the Welsh Government on behalf of Wrexham Council and am delighted by today’s announcement.”
