Wrexham to Receive 2/3rds of Welsh Transport Budget Boost

Wrexham is to receive £7.3million of this year’s £11.5million Welsh Government National Transport Grant, it has emerged – almost two thirds of the total and more than all other Welsh Local Authorities combined.  The money will go toward upgrading the second section of the Wrexham Industrial Estate link road.

Wrexham’s Welsh Labour Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths has spoken of her ‘delight’ at the ‘solid commitment’ shown by the Welsh Government to upgrading Wrexham’s transport infrastructure.

This news comes within weeks of the emergence of figures which detail £36.66million is to be allocated for the redoubling of the Chester – Wrexham train line, to be completed by 2015.

Commenting on the figures, Lesley Griffiths said:

“I am delighted at this additional funding. The funds will allow completion of the second section of the Industrial Estate link road to go ahead within schedule.

“The modernisation of the link road will enable Wrexham Industrial Estate to boast transport links competitive with anywhere in the UK making it more attractive than ever to business.

“This also comes alongside news of the planned redoubling of the Wrexham to Chester line by 2015 – also thanks to Welsh Government funds.

“The two projects represent a significant upgrade to our local transport infrastructure which will provide a long term boost to jobs and the economy of the town. In addition, they will provide a welcome jobs boost to local supply chains while under construction.

“Through allocating almost two thirds of this year’s Transport Grant to the town, the Welsh Government has shown a solid commitment to providing Wrexham with a transport infrastructure second to none.”
