All of the Council’s main routes have been kept clear despite snow falling well into the early hours of this morning. Traffic has continued to flow through the night and into today and the Streetscene operators have been working tirelessly to make sure that we do all that we can to keep Wrexham moving in what is the longest cold snap in over 30 years.
Currently, the Council has enough rock salt to keep the main priority routes clear for 8 days, providing that no more snow falls during that period. If significant and prolonged snowfall is experienced then this will reduce the number of days the Council will be able to continue to grit.
The Council maintains its current stance as outlined in the Winter Maintenance Policy which states that our policy is to keep the following routes clear:
- Major bus routes, including trunk roads [A483] and A and B class roads
- Main access routes to schools and higher education establishments
- Main industrial estates
- Town Centre access roads
Councillor David Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport said “We are fortunate in Wrexham that, as a result of planning and forward thinking early in 2009, we increased our salt capacity this year to over 4,000 tonnes, however, stocks need to be replenished as rocksalt is only effective for up to 8 hours. The Streetscene staff are working round to clock to ensure that we grit our main routes in order that they remain passable during this period of adverse weather”.
Due to the continuing severe weather conditions bin collections for today, Thursday 7 January, will be suspended. Those households who miss their bin collections tomorrow are advise to put both bins our for collection next week. Given the recent changes to bin collections over the festive period residents are advised to check their calendar and bin sticker in order to ensure that the bins are put out on the correct day next week. This information can also be found on the Council’s website. This will mean that any spare resources can be deployed to clearing routes and clearing side roads.
