Roads and highways
The Vale is currently experiencing some of the coldest weather for 30 years and this, together with the latest snowfall, is making driving and walking conditions extremely hazardous. Additionally we have been receiving unprecedented requests for salting roads and salt bin filling which unfortunately cannot be met.

A fleet of 10 gritters was out most of the night treating our main roads and highways. The gritters will continue to treat roads throughout the day.

Penarth still remains quite badly affected by the snow. Main routes have been gritted but residents are advised to take care on smaller roads. These are unlikely to be treated today.

Other roads in the Vale may also be currently difficult to access and the council will do its best to clear these over the course of the day. All current resources are being utilised to ensure that the main road network is kept open and that traffic is kept moving.

The Council would like to advise the public to only make journeys that are absolutely necessary and, if journeys have to be made, to make adequate provision with clothing and essentials for this type of weather.

Refuse and recycling
Due to the current weather conditions there will be no refuse collection and recycling services today. Residents are asked to take in their waste and recycling as, weather permitting, this will now be collected on Saturday 9 January 2010. Residents can either check our website or telephone our contact centre on 01446 700111 for updates throughout the day.

A decision on refuse collection and recycling arrangements for tomorrow will be taken at 06:00hrs on 7 January 2010.

The Household Recycling Centres at Llandow and Sully are currently closed for health and safety reasons. A decision as to whether these can be opened will be taken later in the day.
