Yale College takes art into the community

displayimage.aspThe Regional Print Centre at Yale College in Wrexham is currently working in partnership with Arts Connection to provide outstanding opportunities for both artists and the local community.

International Artist and Regional Print Centre member Brian Jones, based in Llanfyllin, is working with Linda Davies, Gwynedd, in one of the local Primary Schools in Gwenfro. The first part of the project will finish in November 2009.

The pupils were able to hear about Brian’s own work and then encouraged to develop their own images in response. The project explores ideas relating to cultural identity and touches on issues relating to our local surroundings, and wider global concerns.

After the two weeks residency the pupils’ work will be developed by the Brian into designs for postage stamps. These will be presented to all children at the school.

Regional Print Centre Coordindator, Steffan Jones-Hughes, said, “This a fantastic opportunity for young people in Wrexham to have first hand experience of working with an International Contemporary Artist. Brian’s work is shown all over the world, in America, Africa, and across Europe. The young people at the school have responded well and it looks as though we are going to be seeing some very exciting and thought provoking stamps on letters from Wrexham in the coming months.”

The residency will conclude with a launch party at the school and an exhibition at the Memorial Gallery, Yale College 17-21st May 2010.

The Regional Print Centre gratefully acknowledges the support of Yale College, Arts Council of Wales and Arts Connection.
