Young athletes go for golds

Pupils from 46 Rhondda Cynon Taf primary schools got on their marks at an indoor athletics festival.

More than 550 children aged seven to 11 attended events held at Michael Sobell Sports Centre, Aberdare; Rhondda Fach Sports Centre, Ystrad, and Llantrisant Leisure Centre.

Pupils took part in track races, hurdles and an obstacle team race. which youngsters from every school competed in. Teachers paired up with their school’s student leader to race against other teachers and students, and the children enjoyed cheering them on.

The festival was organised in association with RCT Sports Development Unit and the University of Glamorgan as part of the second year module ‘Community Sports Development’. More than 75 university Sport students led the athletics sessions.

Julie Price, assistant Dragon Sport officer, explained the importance of the sessions: “The Sports Development team values these events because they provide a player pathway for years 4, 5 and 6 to progress from festival participation to competition,” she said.

“They also create an avenue to form school-club links with athletic clubs within the authority. The input from the University of Glamorgan students helps reinforce good practice and ensures the smooth-running of the events. It also provides an opportunity for the students to gain some valuable experience in their volunteering and coaching careers.”

Senior university lecturer, Rob Griffiths said: “The links are invaluable as such placements allow students to develop their experiential learning and vocational skills.

“Working alongside experienced sports development professionals on a weekly basis will help prepare them for gaining employment within the industry.”

Teacher Andrew Williams of Pontyclun Primary said: “We were lucky enough to attend two of the three afternoons and both were fantastic events. They were extremely well-organised, with the children being active for the full afternoon. The University students gave constant praise and encouragement to the children.”
