Young swimmers making a national splash

Three young Pembrokeshire swimmers will be making a splash on the national stage next week.

Isabelle Davies, Kelsey Williams and Carys Thomas will be competing against the top swimmers in their age groups at the ASA British Age Group Championships in Sheffield.

All three swimmers train regularly with their local clubs and with Pembrokeshire’s County Performance Squad.

“It’s a remarkable achievement to have three swimmers compete at such a prestigious event, “said Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services, Sports, Leisure and Tourism.

“They are all major talents to watch for the future.”

Eleven-year-old Isabelle Davies from Goodwick will compete in four categories at the national championships – the first year she has been able to qualify.

The Ysgol Wdig/Goodwick School pupil developed her talent with Fishguard Flyers and will race in the 800m freestyle, the 1500m freestyle, the 200m butterfly and the 400m individual medley.

Eleven year old Kelsey Williams from Haverfordwest will compete in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events and 200m and 400m individual medley. The Ysgol Glan Cleddau pupil learnt to swim at Haverfordwest Swimming Pool and developed her talent with Haverfordwest Seals.

Meanwhile 12-year-old Carys Thomas from Pembroke will be busy swimming in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, and the 200m and 400m individual medley.

The Ysgol y Preseli pupil learnt to swim at four and is now a member of Pembroke and District swimming club.

Pembrokeshire Leisure swimming development coach, Paul Dowey, who coaches the County Performance Squad, praised the dedication and commitment of all three swimmers and their club coaches.

“Their hard work and effort and their commitment to the training programme has certainly produced results,” he said.

“On behalf of swimming in Pembrokeshire we wish all three girls well.”

The British National Age Group Championships will take place in Ponds Forge, Sheffield on 28th July- 1st August
